Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to highlight the key elements that enable a real applicability of the mutual defence clause written within the art. 42(7) of the Treaty for the European Union (TEU) by using a different approach and understanding on the field. In order to overview the main features and to understand the effects of the mutual clause we will provide a comparative analysis with the collective defence clause – art. 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO). The methodology used is represented by a synthetic qualitative documentary analysis with a comparative component. The research design will provide the key elements identified through a comparative analysis on mutual defence clause, common ground, terms and conditions, practical application, limitations, and future prospects needed to better understand the EU purpose in achieving a common defence.
