Summary/Abstract: This study has two distinct goals. Firstly it aims to draw a historical picture upon the theme of the subject as this fundamental theme was developed within the frame of modern and contemporary European culture. This endeavour is made by disclosing in the same time some of the essential implications for psychology that could be derived from this intellectual journey. The second goal is build exclusively on the need to understand the impact generated for psychology at its fundamental theoretical level by the historical debate about the topic of the subject. Within this frame, in the end, an essential difference is drawn between the limited achievements of all contemporary applicative theories from the general field of psychology and the endless quest to find ultimate answers regarding the issue of the subject.
