Summary/Abstract: In this article, we will analyze the phenomenon of marginalization and stigmatization of Roma people in Bulgaria from the perspective of sociolinguistics and the anthropology of language. By studying several online platforms (comments and social media posts), we will observe how so-called “Gypsiness” is not an inherent set of characteristics exclusive to Roma people but rather the result of a discursive process of stigmatization, essentialization, and categorization. Through this process, the Bulgarian “people” is constructed in contrast and opposition. This analysis will thus allow us to challenge the very notion of “people.”
