Summary/Abstract: The Black Sea region has undergone many geopolitical changes over time, having been under the control of various empires. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a power vacuum emerged, which eventually disappeared with the expansion of structures such as NATO and the EU. The first destabilizing event occurred with the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014, prompting the Alliance to deploy troops and military equipment on the eastern flank. Another destabilizing moment in the region was the massing of Russian troops along Ukraine’s western border in 2021 and 2022. Once again, NATO responded accordingly, sending troops and military equipment to the eastern flank. The military forces deployed to Romania come from several allied countries, and the equipment sent is diverse, covering a wide range—from battle tanks to radars and fighter/surveillance aircraft.
