Summary/Abstract: This report focuses on volunteering in the EU and efforts to build solidarity and develop active citizenship and mutual understanding among young people. It traces the development of the idea of promoting volunteering and the involvement of the European institutions in this process. A comprehensive overview of EU programmes related to volunteering and their transformation over the years is given. Particular attention is paid to the European Solidarity Corps, which is a one-stop shop enabling young people to gain useful experience for their personal and professional development and to express their commitment to their communities through participation in solidarity activities.
