Summary/Abstract: This report examines the indicators included in the scoreboard for monitoring macroeconomic imbalances in the European Union. The Scoreboard was established as part of the Macroeconomic Imbalances Procedure to encourage Member States to take timely corrective action when imbalances are identified. The indicators in the scoreboard have been both well received for their early warning qualities and criticised for their complexity, relevance and consistency. This paper aims to look in particular at external imbalances and competitiveness indicators, their theoretical underpinnings and practical relevance.
