Summary/Abstract: The European Universities Initiative was launched in 2018-2019 to support the mission of higher education institutions to establish themselves as key actors in solving major contemporary societal challenges and to support the building of sustainable internal, local, national and supranational communities. On the other hand, the topic of the third mission/„quadruple helix“ is established as a significant public expectation for Bulgarian higher education institutions. Some of them have historical experience in this regard; others are making their impact without using the imposed terminological apparatus; others are in the process of clearly foregrounding their third mission. The task of this paper is to review the impact of the European Universities Initiative on selected Bulgarian HEIs in terms of their understanding and practice of the third mission
