Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to understand the way city inhabitants from Bucharest relate to urban agricultural practices in the post-socialist context, in order to to inform the development of legislative frameworks (laws, regulations, public policies) that support urban agriculture. For this aim we conducted qualitative literature reviews of publications on the topic of urban agriculture in Romania and an analysis of the current situation of community gardens in Bucharest, including mapping, interviews and site visits. Results demonstrate that many city inhabitants and authorities consider urban agriculture as ”uncivilized” and a relic of the socialist past. At the same time, small grassroots initiatives concerned with environmental issues have taken on promoting urban agriculture practices by initiating community gardens. The high interest of participants in gardening activities and the rate of development of these initiatives, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, demonstrate the growing interest of city inhabitants in practicing urban agriculture and the need for top-down support by suitable legislative frameworks.
