Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, we are looking to the rise and spread of a dangerous phenomenon which has locally implications and also regionally/globally too. More and more political and military leaders are seizing and promoting a false patriotism, hidden within speeches that illustrate various values and symbols that are truly important for society. All this illustrate the interest to attribute themselves the label of nationalist, man of the people, and lover of the country. The purpose of this strategy is none other than to come to power or consolidate it. This article aims to theoretically develop the new phenomenon and describe some examples that support its scope. Thus, the research questions are: What does the current nationalist phenomenon entail and what distinguishes it from a genuine one? What negative implications could this have on security environment? Therefore, the following concepts will be addressed: civic nationalism, ethnic nationalism, latent nationalism, virulent nationalism, violent nationalism; trends of nationalism: isolationism, protectionism, conservatism, xenophobia, as well as aspects related to the propagation of the phenomenon, the dynamics of nationalist ideology, and the relationship between negative nationalism and corruption.
