Summary/Abstract: Both NATO and the EU are based on common values, on the determination to face common challenges and on the unequivocal commitment to promote and protect peace, freedom and prosperity in the Euro-Atlantic area. The EU-NATO relations were institutionalized in the early 2000s, building on steps taken in the 1990s to promote greater European responsibility for defence. EU-NATO cooperation has been and remains essential for strengthening Euro-Atlantic security. NATO remains the foundation of collective defense for its members, but at the same time a stronger and more capable European defense to complement NATO is essential. This process is fundamental to maintaining security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area, now more than ever due to increasing challenges and threats.
