Summary/Abstract: The trend towards consolidation of the Bulgarian banking market has been current for almost 20 years. Consolidation in the sector takes place through mergers and acquisitions of some banks by others. Most of the regulations in the sector and investments in new technologies can be cited as the main reason for these activities. Consolidation is a process that moves along the lines of rather strengthened regulations in the sector, which make banking activities too expensive. On the other hand, larger banks can afford to buy fintech companies that rely mostly on technology and cloud services – and less on physical locations – to provide financial services that affect the way consumers store, save, borrow, invest, move, pay and protect their money or technology from it to apply in their business. These are constant investments in new software, which is a very expensive undertaking for some of the small banks in Bulgaria. The reviewed overview provides a glimpse of a process that started back in the distant year 2000. Thanks to it, the growth of the market share of individual banks in Bulgaria can be traced over the years.
