Summary/Abstract: The introduction of the science fiction genre in children’s and young adult Galician literature was influenced by complex factors in which an essentialist model promoted by the hegemonic cultural currents intersected with the configuration of a new legal framework. At the beginning of the 1980s, the emergence of a potential audience linked to formal education resulted in a strong correlation between Galician literature and educational institutions. This circumstance produced a series of specific characteristics which had an impact not only on the success this genre did (or did not) achieve in narratives for adults, but also on the complexity of creating a model without a consistent publishing practice in the Galician context. The paper analyses the literary works that played the leading role in that period - from the mid-1980s to 1992 - by tracing their connections with the technological perspective, the idea of community and the proposed cultural model.
