Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present how the readings included in the core curriculum of the Polish language subject can be discussed in the context of contemporary challenges. The Polish village shown in the positivist novel Janko Muzykant may – due to the age of the recipients – leave students with a stereotypical image of the 19th-century village as a closed historical period, which in no way corresponds to the reality of a modern student. Both compulsory and supplementary readings included in the core curriculum can be related to contemporary challenges, i.e. discussed, if possible, in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. We expand the space of interpretation and analysis of literary works, relating texts often considered archaic to the realities in which contemporary students live. We are also able to sensitize young people to the needs of the modern world and equip them with into a sense of action.
