A free pardon for life-term prisoners in the context of pleas for clemency and court opinions

Summary/Abstract: Those sentenced to life imprisonment have two possibilities for leaving prison: conditional early release and pardon. Relatively few respondents sentenced to life imprisonment decided to plea for clemency. Their requests for pardon were made in a fairly uniform manner, indicating remorse, the will to redress the offence and the progress in rehabilitation. The court opinions concerning the pleas for clemency were mostly negative, as according to courts, pardon could be granted when extraordinary and exceptional events occur.
