Summary/Abstract: The article presents the issue of green bonds as a􀁢modern developing tool for financing sustainable investments. The history of green bonds as well as basic assumptions, guidelines and requirements for issuers were presented. Then, on the basis of statistical data, the development of this instrument in the world, Europe and Poland was analyzed. There is a huge level of differentiation in this development – there are countries where a larger volume is issued with a lower value, and there are also others, where the emissions are single, but have a high value. There are entrepreneurs as issuers, but often also local and central authorities. The contemporary determinants of green bonds’ development may indicate that this is an instrument which importance will probably grow rapidly.
