Summary/Abstract: The European millennium spanning the period from the apocalyptic dread of the year 1000 to the fear of total annihilation today is the millennium of the Christian nations situated between the Atlantic and Asia. For Halecki, the rise, grandeur, and tragedy of these national histories—despite the diversity of historical facts—coalesce into an integral whole, wherein "the key concepts of the Christian philosophy of history are applied to the interpretation alongside a truly objective historical method." The wealth of material is organized in a way that avoids the usual schematic superficialities, incorporating the Byzantine and Eastern European spheres as fully as they deserve. Yet—and precisely for this reason—the book illuminates the lines of development and manifold parallels that shape the clearly discernible overall structure of this millennium, at the close of which Europe enters—and steps back into—the universal history of a future millennium.
