Summary/Abstract: It may seem paradoxical to say that European history has always been a neglected subject; yet, if we adopt the authors’s definition of European history as "the history of all European nations, viewed as a whole—as a community distinct from any other," we find that, among the vast number of books whose titles suggest they deal with European history, very few actually meet this definition. We possess hundreds of thousands of books dealing with the histories of the nationalities and states that make up the European community, and we have books that address world history from a European perspective; however, historical works treating Europe itself as a distinct and autonomous community are so few in number that they can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
