Summary/Abstract: The book offers an account of the beginnings of Polish translations of Shakespeare’s plays from the original language. Published in the first decades of the 19th century, the earliest translations of Shakespeare occupied a transitional position between early stage adaptations and second-hand abridgements on the one hand, and the fully developed reception of canonical translations on the other. The initial translations are examined within a descriptive methodology framework, including an analysis of their literary reception. Particular emphasis is placed on the emergence of assessment criteria and the resulting strong polarization of critical opinion.
