Summary/Abstract: The condition of Central Europe dominates the very condition of Europe. History, the great educator of humankind, teaches us that this part of our continent has been, since the earliest times, the center of European politics. Its geographical position is exceptional. Due to the lack of precision in its borders, it opens onto the Russian Plain, while its terraces merge with those of the French region or extend towards the Balkans. Its boundaries have been, at various times, the Rhine, the Oder, the Vistula, or the Scheldt, the Dolomites, or the Transylvanian Alps. It is a barrier between the northern and southern groups, between the western and eastern; it was long divided between two great empires that constantly sought to expand, whose borders were often indistinct and limited only by the sea or the Alps. It contains three major European races and three major religions, all climates and all varieties of cultures, and is thus the most privileged region of Europe. One can say, in fact, that everything is found there, condensed or equalized there.
