Summary/Abstract: If we proceed from the assumption that the Slavs or Slavic nations together are and have been a special ethnographic entity since ancient times, which is probably distinguished from other similar ethnographic units (if not in anything else, at least in their languages), it is possible to ask ourselves what the past fates or historical development of this entity were. The settlement of Slavs, the close mutual proximity of its individual nations, mutual contacts, but especially the same or at least similar living conditions of all, namely geographical and natural conditions and, above all, the almost equal relationship of all to neighboring nations - all this provides the basis for a unified conception of their history, or for the knowledge of their common fates. A historian, describing the history of Slavs, cannot naturally narrate everything that makes up the history of its individual nations, but only what he finds the same in all of them or what he sees as the result of the same causes. Whoever tells the history of trade, notices in the individual participants in the history of trade only what constitutes the history of trade - that is, in the history of the Slavs, it is necessary to seek out and arrange in a genetic series those events that together give a picture of what all Slavs had in common in their development.
