Summary/Abstract: The study aid is an introduction to cyanobacterial and algal ecology and is intended for students of biology and ecology at Czech universities. It covers the basic characteristics of algal inhabited environments, the life history of cyanobacteria and algae in the water column and on the substrate, and the use of algae for assessing surface water quality. Methods of study in algology are outlined in broad outline, including the latest research directions. The next section discusses the different cyanobacterial and algal habitats, namely flowing waters, lakes, wetlands, terrestrial and extreme habitats. The phytoplankton and phytobenthos of the seas are mentioned very briefly, given the inland location of the Czech Republic. The book is supplemented with illustrative diagrams, specific examples from the Czech Republic and colour photographs of common representatives of cyanobacteria and algae.
