Summary/Abstract: Every historical figure, every thought of his, and all his work bears the spiritual seal of his time: only with it and in it can he be understood, only with it and from it can he be interpreted. This is true many times over for Žižka, who is the fruit of a storm whose power and depth have never been equaled before or since in our country. We must therefore first of all become acquainted with the spiritual and contemporary environment in which the historical Žižka was born and Tábor grew up. There are several ways to do this — I have chosen the one that relatively best guarantees the immediacy and clarity of information and, due to its documentary nature, promises relatively the most reliable lessons. I give the floor directly to Žižek's outstanding contemporaries, including several men who are the true representatives and spokesmen of the Czech intellectual effort of that time, so that they can explain to us their own opinion on the situation, their evaluation of programs and ideas, their moral standards, defenses, and condemnations, so that we can see the time in question in its own perspective.
