Summary/Abstract: The communist regime in Yugoslavia, especially in its early years, viewed intellectuals with suspicion, dividing them into "honest" revolutionaries and "reactionary" critics, the latter often facing censorship, persecution, or imprisonment. Literature and art were expected to serve ideological purposes, with any deviation from socialist dogma treated as subversive and punishable, particularly under laws like Article 133, which criminalized "hostile propaganda." Though a degree of cultural liberalization emerged after 1948, allowing some ideological diversity, state control over artistic and intellectual expression remained strong until the late 1980s.
