Why you Should Study the History of the Art of War

Summary/Abstract: The author focuses on the key aspect of getting to know the essence of the art of war, namely on studying works, literature or scientific research, which allows reaching this goal. The article presents observations on junior officers’ knowledge of the theory and history of the art of war, and also refers to the research conducted among officers studying at the War Studies University (Akademia Sztuki Wojennej). The aim of the publication is to make the audience and academics aware of the role of studying literature that covers the issues of the art of war and polemology in the didactic process and in developing students’ knowledge. The author points to the roles and tasks for academic teachers in guiding students in their selection of literature, but also with reference to the methodology of studying works on military history, and above all, the issues related to the art of war. The inspiration for the search for this article was the author’ s personal conviction about the necessity and need to indicate directions for the study of war history and theory. It is also dictated by the concern about the decreasing knowledge of officers and a certain terminological chaos in the art of war.
