Summary/Abstract: This article presents the case of discrimination based on sex in the statutory social insurance in Bulgaria, in relation to the amount of pensions which, under national law women can acquire, when compared to the pension that can be acquired by men. It shows how the formal acclamation of the principle of nondiscrimination of insured persons, for the purposes of the section of the pension system which is state and mandatory, is not reflected when it comes to calculating the pension amounts, resulting in discrimination against women. The article also shows how this is in breach of the law of the European Union and of the European Convention on Human Rights.
