Summary/Abstract: The text examines the variety of roles that Jonas Mekas plays in the field of experimental cinema. Mekas' creative identity is elusive - poet, cinematographer, curator, film critic. After his death in 2019, he left a significant legacy of works. His dedication to cinematic expression makes him the most prominent figure in American experimental cinema, covering the period from the late 50's to the late 70's of the twentieth century. Mekas is co-founder, editor and author of the film magazine "Film Culture" , co-founder of the organization for distribution of experimental films - "The Film-Makers' Cooperative" and the first museum for storage and presentation of experimental films and videos - "Anthology Film Archives", consisting of a library, archive and cinemas.Key words: experimental cinema; film diary; film criticism; film distribution
