Summary/Abstract: Research topics as expansive and historically dynamic as colour in cinema will remain inevitably unfinished. Nevertheless, a set of core principles was established since the revolution brought into cinema by colour film stock. Most of them remain valid in contemporary filmmaking whilst others are being greatly transformed. The text briefly outlines significant stepping stones in the technological development of colour in cinema by analysing contextual colour usage in a variety of films. Digital technology in filmmaking led to a transformation in the aesthetic of specific scenes, especially the way night has been represented on screen in the last decade in comparison to analogue filmmaking.
