Summary/Abstract: In 2011, the Federal Constitution of Mexico was amended in order to provide better protection for human rights; with this reform, a category of principles and rights was incorporated into the Federal Constitution (such as the principle of the best interests of the child, the pro homine principle, the principles of equality and dignity, and the right to identity) that have impacted and transformed various classic institutions belonging to Family Law such as: marriage, divorce, cohabitation, filiation, parental authority and maintenance, among others. Consequently, with this Constitutional Reform, a “constitutionalization of Family Law” has been generated in Mexico, which has transformed and modified these classic institutions, in order to adapt them to the needs of the Mexican society of the XXI century, although this, in many cases, has been done through law cases and jurisprudence, and not through legislative reforms.
