Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to determine the directions of changes in the European Union in the near future in the context of the role of the EU as a player on the world stage. The aim of the article is to indicate opportunities and threats to the position of the EU, as well as to determine the main competitors on a global scale. The article analyses of the program of German Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2020, in terms of its potential impact on the shape and the role of the EU as a global player. The goal of strengthening Europe set by Germany during its presidency of the EU Council will be accompanied by unsolved problems. The most important of these are issues related to the borders of the independence and sovereignty of Member States, the scope of their foreign policy shaping, including economic policy, and problems affecting individual countries in an asymmetrical manner in the context of global crises. German presidency of the EU Council may therefore be a decisive period for the pace and scope of internal EU integration, and for strengthening or weakening its position on the global stage in the long term.
