The Global Collapse of Trust in Social Media as News Source

Comparative Survey Results 2015 vs 2021

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the change in usage of social networks as a source of newsworthy information in the context of the global trends taking shape in the recent years. We are facing а paradoxical situation in which we are seeing low levels of trust in social networks as a quality information source, but despite of this they are being used actively and even receive legitimacy and are empowered through their continuing penetration in established traditional media outlets. The author’s survey with practitioners – international news editors from TV broadcast media from around the globe – allows for examining the shift in attitudes between 2015 and 2021.
