Summary/Abstract: The presented considerations fall within the scope of historical pedeu- tology. The presented sketch is devoted to the master-teacher problem in the context of the development of science, research and teaching. It attempts to describe the obligations that must be fulfilled by a person in order to be called a master. It was carried out on the basis of selected examples of masters, distinguished for science and teaching, mainly rep- resentatives of the history of education and pedagogy. Their merits are based on the creation of scientific schools and contribution to the devel- opment of Polish scientific communities. Studies, archival materials and diary literature were all used for the purpose of presenting the issue. The conclusions achieved from the analysis of sources led to the belief that one of the most important characteristics of a master-teacher is reliability, which is manifested in both university teaching and research. Scientific reliability is not only a value in general, but most importantly a duty of people who can be called masters. It must be emphasized that the article does not pretend to be an exhaustive study, it is merely an outline of planned further research on the essence of the master-teacher and its importance in the history of science and culture.
