The New Man’s avatars – from communism to post-communism

Summary/Abstract: This article explores one of the main ideologemes in several societies that had the ambition of social engineering: the New Man. The concept tempted both extreme right and left ideologues, who projected an ideal citizen, described as being physically, intellectually and morally perfect. But the theory, when applied to real life, led to disastrous results, as the real citizens of these totalitarian regimes proved to be far from the developed ideal type. Moreover, they carried forward some of the undesired results of this unsuccessful experiment to the post-communist societies.
