Summary/Abstract: Between 1887 and 1893, Dr. Vasile Lucaciu was dragged into several trials and tried in Satu Mare and Debrecen. Arrested on remand and then imprisoned in Satu Mare, Szeged and Budapest, the “Lion from Șișești” will gain the reputation of a national martyr. The Romanian press in Transylvania, the newspapers in Budapest, but also the newspapers in Romania wrote about the accused Lucaciu. He dared to accuse the government and its representatives of the dynamite attack on the notary in Ferneziu. And in the courtrooms in Satu Mare and Debrecen, Dr. Lucaciu had the courage to speak in Romanian. On December 28, 1892, Lucaciu was arrested and taken to the Szeged State Prison. While in the state prison the “Wallachian apostle” gave interviews to the Hungarian press, but the strict regime in the Satu Mare penitentiary did not allow him visits or outside supplies, and his correspondence was read and censored. The conditions to which he was subjected during the period he spent in prisons in Satu Mare and Szeged made him ill. Only after the intervention of the Minister of Justice was he moved to Budapest to be treated. He was released in February 1894, a few months before the great trial of the Cluj Memorandum.
