Summary/Abstract: The imaginary universe of stories told by Susanna Tamaro in her short prose named Pe o singură voce annihilates the reader’s mind through grotesque images of heartbreaking cruelty. They perish in a world of abused childhood, where pain and trauma are the only senses aroused in the child’s perception. The child acquires the role of the victim, a stranger in his world, being devoid of affection and forced, in his own naivete, to look for surrogates who imitate love. The author points out, in all five stories (Iarăși luni, Love, O copilărie, Sub zăpadă, Pe o singură voce), the existence of trauma under different aspects and ages, analytically exposing tragic episodes from childhood and adulthood, as a result of abuses and traumatic episodes experienced at an early age or transgenerationally. The pain translates the parent-child axis, suggesting through each scene, the impact and the direct rapport created by negligence, aggression, sexual abuse, lack of communication, torture, indifference and lack of love. The nocturnal fears, the feelings at the limit of existence, the ill-treatment, the obsessive symbols, the heredity, the sickly aggressor and the sick infant sink the reading into the cyclical mire of ritual pain. The narrative universe of the stories knows no trace of shyness, exposing the ferocity of the sick mind and its repercussions on the victims. Each episode contains in its core the roots of mentally ill characters from the sphere of sociopathy and personality disorders, various syndromes, but also transgenerational trauma.
