Summary/Abstract: The article aims to reconstruct the nature of the American field of art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries from Pierre Bourdieu’s theory. The analysis of the art field is based on the interpretation of materials gathered in the United States. Events of the period such as emancipation of some artists from the influence of the Academy, foundation of independent art schools, creation of independent galleries, establishment of artistic criticism, organization of subsequent exhibitions of American contemporary art, opening of the Armory Show (1913), and breaking with academic style, marked the first phase of autonoization of the art field in the US. The article discusses the process of its constitution and early emancipation. The author indicates the participants of the status game in the field, determines their role and meaning, describes their mutual relations and dependencies. On the other hand, these elements are described in the context of social change occurring in the US. Due to the multidimensional nature of transformation in the field, it was considered in the categories of the symbolic revolution.
