Summary/Abstract: In the spring of 2012, following a field research session, several archaeological artefacts were discovered in Turda (Hun. = Torda; De. = Thorenburg) at “Valea Sărată” (located north-east of the salt lakes). The discovered items were prehistoric stone tools and ceramic shards (prehistoric, Dacian-Roman, post-Roman and early-Medieval). The archaeological artefacts recovered in the field create the topographical image of a large site, with habitations from different ages. The site was inhabited from the Neolithic until the Modern Age, and near it, the researchers from the Turda Museum have discovered in the last years the remains of a Roman villa rustica. In the Medieval period, the inhabitants from the former settlement of Kölked (Hun. = Külked), destroyed by Mongols, will relocate next to the salt mines, at Torda Akna. The activities of the inhabitants and those of the German miners will consist of mining and trading salt. Transported across land and on rivers, the salt from Turda will supply the markets from Central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula. The materials we have analysed in the article consist of stone tools and some ceramic shards; the Roman ceramics will be published in the future.
