Names of Inhabited Spots in the Marijampolė District

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with unofficial names of inhabited spots in the Marijampolė district, recorded from living speech in the interwar period. It offers a discussion and analysis of their derivational features, based on the mechanisms of toponymisation, transtoponymisation and transonymisation. These oikonymic derivatives are thus examined from several points of view. The conclusions offered at the end of the article enable an assessment of the general tendencies concerning origin and derivation of the class of place names under discussion. The analysis offered here will subsequently be integrated in an overall analysis of the tendencies in origin and derivation of oikonyms in the area under examination.
