Summary/Abstract: This article (taken from the book “Hermeneutics of western translations of the Qur’an “, the work that is still in preparation) discusses various options of translating the Qur’an, giving the example of the surah al-A‘rāf/the Hights, 7:40, and it is closely related to variations in translations of this particular ayah in European and the western translations of the Qur’an. The origin of these discrepancies lies in differences of understanding and interpreting the word al-ğamal ( مََلُ الْ – camel), because this word can be consonated and vocalised in this way as well: al-ğummalu ( مَُّلُ الْ ), meaning “a thick twisted rope “. European and western translations the Qur’an which we consulted here opt for either one of these possibilities of understanding this particular place 7:40. In this article we cited a number of original Arabic texts from classical commentaries of the Qur’an wherein it is evident that these two options were taken in consideration for the understanding the ayah 7:40, and both were, mostly, considered equally compatible.
