Summary/Abstract: the county of niemodlin that lied within the german regency of opole before the war, found itself under the rule of the red army from the end of january till march 1945. the provisional authority over this area was wielded by the Soviet military headquarters. the group of officials invested with the task of organizing the polish administration in the area of the county did not reach niemodlin until on 8 may 1945. two days later, the military commanding officer formally transferred the power over the area to the starost (chief officer) of the county. the local administration, from the very beginning, were closely connected with polska partia robotnicza (polish workers’ party). the latter became firmly rooted in the area of niemodlin, taking advantage of the organizational monopoly that lasted until october 1945. it was then that the local branch of polska partia Socjalistyczna (polish Socialist party) was established. despite the formal alliance that linked the two workers’ parties, the local socialists soon entered into conflict with the communists over the limitations in access to the key positions in the county authorities. the other political parties, including the opposition party polskie Stronnictwo ludowe (polish peasants’ party), were reduced to playing a marginal role on the local political stage. the communists’ hegemony grew even stronger following the parliamentary election in january 1947. they won it as a result of mass repressions they had applied, in consequence of which the peasants’ party was crushed and the social resistance broken. on the other hand, the result of the election did not reflect the preferences of the majority of the inhabitants of the county. in 1948, the workers’ party subdued and then completely overwhelmed the Socialist party. in this way, the power of the communist party became unquestionable and unrivaled
