Summary/Abstract: The article presents the moods of the population of the Katowice voivodship during the Berlin and Cuban crises in 1961 and 1962, as well as attempts to “manage” crises by the party-state authorities and the security apparatus. In the months of the growing threat of nuclear war, propaganda activities carried out by the local structures of the Polish United Workers’ Party intensified, and administrative activities were carried out to limit widespread panic. Action aimed against opponents of the system and the country intensified. Despite the activism of the party authorities and the security apparatus, war psychosis increased within the society, manifesting itself most oft en in the mass purchase of goods and the spread of rumours that fuelled fears. No other disorders occurred.
