Summary/Abstract: This study investigates the concept of ‘success’ as a cultural value and part of the national-specific thinking of the Bulgarian people. The paper suggests a close relationship between Bulgarian culture and that of individuals with an “external locus of control” (the term of Julian B. Rotter). This is backed-up by a lingo-cultural analysis of Bulgarian phrases and sayings in contemporary Bulgarian colloquial speech that refer to success and/or lack of success.
