Summary/Abstract: The aim of the research is to present the use of the noun phrases of [N[N] type with the subordinate noun in preposition, which have been very popular in the last decades. The reasons for the spread of these constructions, as well as their contradictory inter-pretation are discussed. Some investigators consider that they are composita and there-fore – a lexical phenomenon, but others (including the author) support the idea that they are noun phrases, i.e. syntactic constructions. Special attention is paid to the presence of the active process of competition between the phrases of the investigated type and the others types of the noun phrases, which exist in the usus together, although sometimes they have a different connotation.
