Summary/Abstract: This article aims to shed light on an important element of bilateral economic relations between the People’s Republic of China and Yugoslavia from the 1950s to the late 1970s, namely the role and place of ships as a means of conducting bilateral trade as a subject of import-export transactions. China‘s trade policy with Yugoslavia in the 1950s was subordinated primarily to Beijing‘s (geo) political and ideological interests. Gradually, after the late 1960s, the importance of the economic factor in its bilateral relations with the government in Belgrade increased. The expansion of cooperation and trade with Yugoslavia, especially in those areas where it is relatively more developed, is in line with the policy of accelerated development and technological modernization of the PRC economy at that time. Against this background, the role and place of maritime transport and shipbuilding stands out. It is in this area that the greatest development in bilateral economic relations was achieved until the mid-1970s.
