Summary/Abstract: Zygmunt Bauman’s analysis of globalization adds in an important way to the prevailing economic analyses, seeking the special features of world economy and the factors increasing the competitive and innovative qualities of national economies. Bauman analyzes relations between power and state, between state and society and between society and individual. The article has three main aims. The first is to present the new quality in these relations. The second is to answer the question regarding the meaning of individual freedom in modern and postmodern times as well as conditions in which it can be realized. The last aim is to position Zygmunt Bauman’s thought within the discourse on contemporary globalization and to question one of the most important ideological bases of this process, according to which free market strengthens liberal democracy and remains the most reliable guarantee of peace and harmony in the world.
