Summary/Abstract: The paper assumes the perpsective of development economics, which combines the present with the past, and economic transition with changes in political, societal and cultural realities. This perspective also reveals a fluctuating character of globalization. It prompts to divide the history of the world's economy into three waves of the process: the first period between the years 1870 and 1913, the second one from the end of World War II till the mid 1970s, and the third and most recent one which arouse with a change in approach to developmental issues in 1980s. The article applies the comparative-historical methodology to focus on the second wave of globalization. It points out specific sources and mechanisms of its dynamics, related main ideas and theories of development and real influence on socioeconomic condition of the world. It presents the changes in the years 1950-1973 to outline economic and political context of evolving ideas about development in the 1980s and 1990s.
