Summary/Abstract: This essay discusses the phenomenon of literary utopia, as presented in Ignacy Krasicki’s novel Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki. It indicates that Krasicki’s Nipu Island has all the distinctive features of the conventional utopian novel – the genre which was initiated by Thomas More but gained popularity in the Enlightenment. This essay also aims to show that the genre in question was used by Krasicki in a completely new way to present the Polish form of the myth of the Golden Age. As a con-sequence, the society of Nipu is conservative in its axiology but utopian in its organisational structure. This combination of the utopian paradigm with the mythical one is referred to in this essay as mythopia.
