Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to discuss some problems observed in Peter Miklavec’s Slovenian translation The Połaniecki Family by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The choice of the equivalent in the target language may reveal some semantic differences: bociany ‘storks’ [SI, p. 33] – čaplje [MI, p. 48] ‘herons’; jak żuraw ‘crane’ [SI, p. 305] – kakor čaplja [MII, p. 181]; lelek ‘nightjar’ [SI, p. 35] – siva čaplja [MI, p. 51]; orzechowy kredens ‘cupboard’ [SI, p. 6] – orehova miza ‘table’ [MI, p. 5]; między sosnami ‘pines’ [SI, p. 133] – med smrekami ‘spruces’ [MI, p. 201]. The data attest instances of specification: tatarak ‘sweet flag’ [SI, p. 21] – muškat ‘kind of sweet flag, calamus’ [MI, p. 29], as well as generalization: pudlem ‘poodle’ [SI, p. 292] – kužek ‘a dog’ [MII, p. 161]. The translation of the phrase: Połaniecki – że ja, który pochodzę z roli [SI, p. 50] – Polaneški „da jaz, dasi sem kmetiškega stanu” [MI, s. 72] is erroneous, as the main hero comes from a noble family. Stylistically marked words may be replaced in the translation by neutral ones: oddaj mi się w łapy [SI, p. 340] – zaupaj moim rokam [MII, p. 235]. The conducted analysis confirms the existence of some semantic and stylistic differences between the original and the translation: być chłopcem młynarskim [SI, p. 285] – biti moka v mlinu [MII, p. 150]. Some phrases are left in the original form: po vsaki tretji besedi ‘Panie dobrodzieju’ [MII, p. 181]. Both in the original and in the translation the Alpine natural world is presented in animate terms, but the metaphorization employed in the translation appears particularly successful: jezioro wygładziło się […] zdawało się drzemać [SI, p. 79] – jezerska gladina […] se je kazala, kakor bi dremala [MI, p. 116].
