Summary/Abstract: The article presents a concise analysis of the development of the concept of political economy from the moment it appeared in the 17th century to the present day. The purpose of this analysis is to indicate the need to return to broader research on the relationship between politics and economics. Thanks to such research, it would be possible to understand better the nature of political and economic crises, such as, i.e. the financial crisis in 2008. According to the author, research on the political economy should be related to the concept of the common good. This approach enables a holistic understanding of reality.
