Summary/Abstract: The relationship between Europe and geography is extremely complicated. In consequence, one can distinguish many senses of “Europe”. Some of them are here identified and put in a historical perspective. This perspective might be helpful in present day discussions concerning the scope and limits of the European integration. Another perspective is, however, also utterly important: the global commitments that European Union has to accept follow not only from the European past, but also from the basic European values and cultural features.
