Summary/Abstract: Belief in eternal life is the foundation of the Catholic faith. Christ, by dying on the cross and rising from the dead, opens to every human being the possibility of eternal life in heaven, in His Father’s kingdom. Man possessing free will may, however, reject God and his saving proposal, thus condemning himself to the eternal state of hell. Catholic theology indicates that eternal damnation is a tragic possibility. In this article two theological questions concerning the state of hell will be presented. The first part will deal with Christ’s descent into hell. The second part of the article will deal with the doctrine of hell in the perspective of the hope of salvation for all.
